Tessy Thomas

Dr. Tessy Thomas, Distinguished Scientist, Director, Advanced Systems Laboratory (ASL), Hyderabad obtained her B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from Calicut University in 1985 and ME in Guided Missiles from Institute of Armament Technology (now Defence Institute of Advanced Technology), Pune in 1986 and Ph.D in Missile Guidance from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), Hyderabad in 2014. She obtained MBA in Operations Management from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi, in 2007.

She has also been conferred Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) in Space Science by Kalyani University, West Bengal, in 2012, Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) by Mangalayatan University, Aligarh in 2012 and Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) from Hindustan University, Chennai in 2014, Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) from Sri Padmavati Mahila Vishwavidyalaya University, Tirupathi in 2015, Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) from ITM University, Gwalior in 2016.

Dr. Tessy Thomas started her career as Scientist ‘B’ from IAT, Pune in 1986. In the year 1988, she moved to Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL), Hyderabad, and was associated with guidance design and HILS of Agni Missile Systems. In 1992, she moved to RCI, Hyderabad, where she designed an explicit guidance design for solid propelled missile Agni 2. Later, she moved to ASL and since then has been contributing in the field of mission design and explicit guidance design for all Agni Systems (Agni 1 to Agni 5). She has designed and developed 6 DoF trajectory simulation for all Agni systems. In her career spanning 31 years, she has contributed in various fields such as guidance, control, inertial navigation, trajectory simulation and mission design.

As Project Director, Agni 4, she heralded a new set of technologies leading to quantum jump technologies and brought world comparable mass fractions for the Indian long-range missile systems with the development of composite rocket motor casing for the first time in the Country.

As Project Director (Mission), Agni 5, she designed a 3-stage all-solid system guidance, which resulted in high impact accuracy. As a Project and Technology Leader, she has played a major role in strategic mission planning and infrastructure development.

Dr. Tessy Thomas is the recipient of many prestigious awards including: DRDO Agni Award for Excellence in Self-Reliance – 2001; DRDO Award for Path breaking Research/Outstanding Technology Development-2007; DRDO Scientist of the Year Award-2008; DRDO Performance Excellence Award for Agni 4 in 2011; DRDO Performance Excellence Award for Agni 5 in 2012; Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award for Excellence in Public Administration Academics and Management-2012; Suman Sharma Award by The Institution of Engineers (India), National Design and Research Forum for Engineering Design in 2009; Smt. Chandaben Mohanbhai Patel Industrial Research Award for Women Scientists-2009 by VASVIK; Maharana Udai Singh Award-2013 by Maharana Mewar Foundation Annual Awards for Contribution in the field of S&T; Madam Marie Curie Mahila Vijnana Puraskar-2012; India Today Woman of the Year Award-2009; CNN-IBN Indian of the Year Award-2012; Shree Ratna Award by Kerala Kalakendram on International Women’s Day 2014. Outstanding Woman Award by National Commission for Women on International Women’s Day-2013; Vanita Ratnam Puraskaram – 2014 by Government of Kerala, Department of Social Justice, Dr. Y. Nayudamma Memorial Award for the Year 2014 for Outstanding Contributions in the field Missile Technology, “Bharat Ratna Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya Award-2016” towards outstanding contributions in the field of Engineering towards design, development and realization of indigenous missile systems by The Institution of Engineers (India), Telangana State Centre, Hyderabad, “Distinguished Woman Scientist Award” in 2016 for her contributions in the field of Missile Technology by Andhra Pradesh Science Congress, Andhra Pradesh Academy of Sciences. Under her leadership, Advanced Systems Laboratory has been awarded as the Best Laboratory for the year 2015 with “Silicon Trophy” for outstanding & innovative contributions in design, development and delivery of Long Range Strategic Missile Systems.

MGPL Narayana

Vice President and Chief Scientist at TCS, Hyderabad

GPL Narayana is Vice President and Chief Scientist at TCS, Hyderabad, served in various software development projects/programs in TCS and managed first ever off-shore delivery center working with a telecom multinational company in India. He led business development for TCS in Silicon Valley, California during Dot-Com era. He initiated and managed several research collaborations with leading universities in North America for TCS.

Mr. Narayana holds Master in Engineering in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). He holds memberships with international professional organizations such as ACM, GloGift, INCOSE, ASC and he is a Senior Member of IEEE. He is a fellow of IETE. He holds several patents and publications in the areas of Contextual Search, Software Quality, Information Security, Consulting and Competency and has been active on several international conference program/organizing committees. As a Chief Scientist he leads Systems Engineering & Cybernetics initiative in TCS. He had volunteered several professional activities, recent ones being Vice Chair for Professional Activities of Region 10 of IEEE and was the Principal Lead for IEEE India Strategy Committee, 2015-16. Currently he is a member on IEEE Computer Society’s Professional &Educational Activities Board (PEAB) and also a steering committee member on Excellence Enable Forum (EEF) of PMI, India. He is leading the “Digital Transformation” initiative under PM-SE integration Working Group of INCOSE.

He won IEEE Outstanding Volunteer Award in 2012 for R10.

Dr Ramalatha Marimuthu

Dr Ramalatha Marimuthu has been teaching in polytechnics and engineering colleges for 30 years and is working in Kumaraguru College of Technology under Anna University.  She has published six technical books and her research area is “Processor Architectures using Vedic Mathematics”. She also guides the students in developing unique solutions for various social problems like dyslexia, drop foot and epilepsy.  

She is an orator of high calibre and has delivered lectures in the Sections Congresses 2008 and 2011, Regional student congresses in Auckland 2011 and Madrid, Spain 2012, Region 10 IEEE Conferences in various countries like Singapore, Japan, Australia and USA. She has delivered lectures at Hanoi University of Technology, Vietnam, Anna University and Indian Institute of Science, India, Tufts University, Boston, USA, Kyushu University, Japan, Queensland University, Brisbane, University of Auckland, Newzealand, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Richland, Washington, Arizona State University, Phoenix and University of Central Florida, Orlando, Tribuvan University, Nepal and BRAC University, Bangladesh. She was a keynote speaker in the IEEE Women in Science and Engineering Conference organised in Perth, Australia in March 2011, a session speaker in IEEE Photovoltaic conference, Seattle, June 2011 and Grace Hopper Celebration for Women in Computing, Baltimore, Maryland 2012 and Bangalore, India 2012. Recently she was invited to give a speech on Assistive Technology by Google at Mountain view, California by the Special Needs Support Group, Google. She has featured in WIE Live chats and WIE E book.  

Dr Marimuthu is a senior member of IEEE and an active volunteer and the founder chairman of Madras IEEE Women in Engineering. She was the first Indian to chair the international Women in Engineering Committee (2011 and 2012). She also chaired the Asia Pacific Region WIE for three years. She has also launched an exclusive project called “Sangamam” for the transfer of technology to rural areas. Under this project, many specific training programs have been organized for the youth and women of selected villages. She represents IEEE India in the Clinton Global Initiative’s Tech Delegation 2013

She has won many awards like IEEE Outstanding Branch Counsellor Award for the year 2008, IEEE MGA Achievement Award in 2008 and IEEE MGA Leadership Award for 2012. She was also awarded the “Life Time Achiever Award” by the Lions Club International in 2009. For the work rendered in mentoring the students towards the development of the early detection screener system for autistic children, she was awarded the Mentor award by the Secretariate for the Disabled, the Government of Tamilnadu in 2009. She has been awarded the “Jewel of the Saliyar Community Award“ in Tamilnadu by Saliyar Mahajan Sangh in 2010 and the Anita Borg Institute Change Agent Award 2012 during the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing in Baltimore, Maryland. This is a prestigious award given to three persons in the world for effecting a change in the lifestyle of the community through their work.  She received the “Systers Spring Pass it on Award” from the Systers Community of Anita Borg Institute, California in 2014 for her work towards helping the women reenter career after a break. She was selected as one of the 200 Women achievers by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, India 2015. Recently she was awarded the “WIE Inspiring Member of the Year of the year Award 2016” from IEEE Women in Engineering Committee.

Divyanshu Varma

With 19 +years of experience in technology industry along with 4 years of international work experience in US and Europe, he has extensively worked in software product development with some of the best organizations, such as Intel, Ericsson, Broadcom, Dell, LSI, GE, NetApp etc, in the area of embedded Linux and Linux kernel development.

Divyanshu owns 2 patents and has participated as speaker in numerous National and International technical events.

Currently Divyanshu works as Senior Manager at Intel India RnD in Bangalore.

Purushothaman S

Senior Scientist, ISRO

Shri. S. Purushothaman completed his B.Tech in ECE from Pondicherry University and currently he is pursuing his M.S (by research) leading to Ph.D in microwave engineering from National Institute of Technology, Trichy. He joined as a Scientist in Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, ISRO at Trivandrum in 2004. Currently he is continuing as a Senior Scientist in ISRO, Bangalore.

He has received “South Indian ASDF-Best Young Scientist award-2016” for the outstanding contribution in the field of engineering and space technology. He has authored more than 30 technical papers at various international conferences and journals. He also received many no. of best paper awards. He is the Life member of leading technical professional bodies like IEEE, ASI, SEMCEI, ATMS, ISSE, ASDF etc., He is the organizing joint secretary for international conference on ATMS every year.

He is passionate about to educate and motivate the student community in the field of space research and its educations. He has supported for many scientific program activities in school and college level to create awareness among the students to pursue their careers in research area. He has delivered more no. of technical invited talk in various institutions and forums. His area of interests includes microwave engineering, Satellite communication, Metamaterial based antenna, Multi antenna for communication, Spacecraft Antenna measurements etc.

Abilash Praveen completed his B.E in CSE from C.S.I College of Engineering, Ketti, The Nilgiris in the year 2003. After working for a year in ITES, he started providing IT services on his own. He is currently the Systems & Security Lead at Concise Creative, Perth, Australia.

He joined IEEE in 2015 and was elevated to a senior member in IEEE in the year 2016.
