Coimbatore (also known as Kovai) is the second largest city in the state of Tamil Nadu with metro population of over 2 million. At a distance of 491 Kms from Chennai, 209 km from Madurai, 383 km from Bangalore, 85 km from Ooty, 189 km from Kochi and 207 km from Mysore, Coimbatore is the administrative headquarters of Coimbatore District.
Situated on the banks of the Noyyal River, Coimbatore is known as Manchester of southern India due to large number of textile industries located in the city. Coimbatore is also famous for its engineering firms, automobile parts manufacturers & educational institutions.
This is located in the Western Ghats zone at an altitude of 2240 mtrs. It is the headquarters of the Nilgiri District, where the two mountain ranges meet. Udhagamandalam , popularly called as OOTY by the tourist, is the Queen of Hill Stations. Centuries ago this was also called as Oththai-Kal [single stone] Mandu [ Mund is a name of Toda Village]. The British started calling it as Ootacamund. Coffee and Tea Plantations and trees like Conifers, Eucalyptus, Pine and Wattle dot the hill side in Udhagamandalam and its environs. Summer temperature is maximum of 25 C and a minimum of 10 C . During the Winter it is minimum 5 C and a maximum of 21 C when it is slightly warmer. This area was inhibited by the tribals called TODA long before any body could venture into this region.
The hoary past of the temple can be traced in such ancient works as Sage Kachyapar’s PERUR PURANAM. The origin of the temple is rooted in legendary antiquity and dates back to the age of Surapadama, the demon destroyed by Lord Subramanya referred to in SKANDAPURNAM. The inscriptions found in Thirumuruganathaswami Temple, Thirumurganpoondi places the origin of the temple in the 12th century A.D.According to Perur puranam, Soorapadama, the scourge of the gods aided by his mighty brothers, Singamukha and Tharaka arrayed against them and struck terror in their already agitated minds by his sudden and surprising charges and depredations.
Dhyanalinga Temple and Velliyangiri
The Velliangiri Mountains, a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, Kailash of the South”, these mountains are held and revered on par with spiritually most powerful place on the planet – Mount Kailash, the legendary abode of Lord Shiva. On the top of the Velliangiri Mountains, Shiva is worshipped as Swayambhu, one who is self-created and in this form, he graces the devotees.
The Dhyanalinga is a Yogic temple located 30 km (19 mi) from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. The temple was consecrated by Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, a yogi and mystic. Dhyanalinga is claimed by the owners of the temple to be a powerful and unique energy form created from the distilled essence of yogic sciences and the first of its kind to be completed in over 2,000 years.The Dhyanalinga Yogic Temple offers a meditative space that does not ascribe to any particular faith or belief system.
Kovai Kutralam falls
Kovai Kutralam is a scenic spot with a gentle waterfall originating on the Siruvani hill ranges. It is located on the western ghat mountain range that lies to the west of this city at a distance of about 35 kms from Coimbatore. The siruvani dam is just above this water fall and this place is under the control of forest department. Permission has to be sought from them to visit this Kovai Kutralam Falls. Limited bus service is available from the city and this area is out of bounds after 5 pm. This is the only place near Coimbatore where you find a nice enchanting waterfall
Gedee Car Museum
Geedee Car Museum houses every significant development in car industry, from a replica of the first automobile in the world (1886 Benz Patent Motorwagen), to recent racing cars. There are over 70 models on display, of which around 30 are from G D Charitable Trust’s collection. And they are arranged chronologically, with documentation explaining the evolution of automobile industry as a whole.
Aliyar Dam is a reservoir located 27 KM away from pollachi on the foothills of Valparai, in the Anamalai range of the Western Ghats. It is located above 918 feet (280 m) from the Mean sea level on the Anamalai mountain range and in the Anamalai Tiger Reserve. It stands majestically with Green Spread Mountains and forest all around. In Aliyar Dam there is a park, garden, aquarium, play area, Boat House Park. Monkey Falls and The Temple of Consciousness are the tourist attactions.
